Changes in NovaBACKUP 22.0:
New Features
New NovaBACKUP Desktop App. A new app replaces the Legacy UI for everyday backup and restore work. It runs in the language selected during installation and is available in 12 languages.
- Dashboard: See the last backup, jobs from the last 24 hours, a 7-day job history, recent jobs, and upcoming scheduled jobs at a glance. Each tile opens the matching entries in Job History. Run backup now starts any backup job.
- Devices: Add and edit local or network storage devices, including network shares that need credentials, Amazon S3-compatible devices, and NovaBACKUP Cloud. Sign up for NovaBACKUP Cloud from the Dashboard. Import existing backups from a device’s details page.
- Backup: Create and edit file backup jobs, with General, Filters, Notifications, Custom Commands, Run As, Retention, and Archive settings and a schedule. Pick a job from a list or browse for a job file. The page reopens the last job you used. Jobs pushed from Central Management open read-only.
- Network paths: Type a UNC path directly when selecting backup sources or an alternate restore location, and enter credentials when the share needs them. Every path field has a Browse button.
- Restore: Restore files with General, Filters, and Run As settings, choose whether to overwrite existing files, and restore to an alternate location, including a network share. When a backup set needs an encryption key the device does not have, the app asks for it.
- Concurrent restores: Large restores split across several restore engines that run in parallel. Tune the split in Settings > Restore Settings.
- Mount: Mount a backup set as a folder and open it in File Explorer to copy single files.
- Activity: Follow several jobs at the same time, including jobs started by a schedule, from Central Management, or from the command line, with detailed progress and a summary when each job ends.
- Job History: Search, sort, and filter every job run by name, date range, type, and result. Open a run to read its log, search within it, jump to warnings and errors, and copy the log. Run again repeats a backup run.
- Settings: Set general options (run missed scheduled jobs on startup, number of logs to keep, minimum free space, temporary files folder, default exclusions, automatic update before a backup), allow or pause scheduled jobs, and define a holiday schedule on which scheduled jobs do not run.
- License and updates: Activate a license online or offline, start a trial automatically when no license is entered, and get a warning before the license expires. The About page shows license and registration details, checks for updates, and runs the Log Collector.
- Windows integration: Recent backup jobs appear in the taskbar jump list, and the tray icon opens the new app.
Disaster Recovery. For full system recovery, select Disaster Recovery in a backup job to back up the drive Windows runs from. Select other drives in the same job to protect their data as well. Disaster Recovery replaces legacy image backup jobs.
- File-based full system backup: Disaster Recovery backups are stored on the same devices as file backups, including NovaBACKUP Cloud and Amazon S3-compatible storage, and use the same retention.
- Recovery media: Create an ISO file, a bootable USB drive, or a recovery partition. A recovery partition is built from the computer’s own Windows Recovery Environment, so no Windows installation media is needed. Add your own drivers to the recovery environment, and include this computer’s device configuration so the restore can find its backups.
- Restore to disk: Start the computer from recovery media, pick a restore point, and restore the system disk with its original partition layout. The recovery environment can restore from local disks, network shares, NovaBACKUP Cloud, and Amazon S3-compatible storage.
- Restore to a Hyper-V virtual machine: Restore a Disaster Recovery backup as a new Generation 2 virtual machine, with settings such as memory and processors chosen during the restore.
- Recovery tokens: Administrators can generate a recovery token for an agent in Central Management, and users can generate one in the app. Redeeming the token in the recovery environment sets up the computer’s cloud device without its original configuration.
- Faster cloud recovery: When connecting a cloud device on a new installation or in the recovery environment, import only the backups from the last few days, newest first.
System State and Hyper-V Restore.
- System State restore: You can now restore System State backups, including the recovery steps Windows needs after the restore.
- Hyper-V restore: Restored Hyper-V virtual machines are registered with Hyper-V again, so they appear in Hyper-V Manager.
NovaBACKUP Central Management.
- Network paths: Type a UNC path directly when selecting backup sources or an alternate restore location, and enter credentials for shares that need them.
- Recovery tokens: Generate a recovery token for an agent, with a warning when the agent cannot use one.
- Tenant switching: Switching tenants refreshes the current page and shows the active tenant.
Changes
- New installations include only the new desktop app. The Legacy UI and the legacy image backup components are installed only when you upgrade from NovaBACKUP 21.x. On an upgraded computer, open the Legacy UI with Open legacy interface.
- Existing legacy jobs, including image backup, Copy, and Virtual Dashboard jobs, keep running on upgraded computers and are managed in the Legacy UI. The new app opens file backup jobs that use local or network storage, Amazon S3-compatible storage, or NovaBACKUP Cloud devices.
- VMware backups are not supported in NovaBACKUP 22. Existing Virtual Dashboard jobs for VMware keep running on upgraded computers.
- Setup now installs the Microsoft .NET 8.0 Runtime and the ASP.NET Core 8.0 Runtime, in addition to .NET Framework 4.7.2 and the Edge WebView2 Runtime.
Fixed Issues in NovaBACKUP Central Management

- Updating a tenant that has roles assigned no longer fails.

- File restore jobs can now be created for backup sets whose media name is longer than 100 characters.
- The domain of a local storage device is no longer saved as part of the user name.
NovaBACKUP Client

- Hyper-V backups now fail instead of reporting success when a virtual disk cannot be backed up.
- Hyper-V virtual machines are now found on hosts whose Windows language is not English, German, or Korean.

- Files created while a backup runs no longer produce “Unable to store object” warnings.
- Backups no longer log Volume Shadow Copy event 8194 (access denied) in the Windows event log.
- When Windows aborts the Volume Shadow Copy snapshot during a backup, the job now fails instead of completing with warnings.
- Exclusions defined as multi-string registry values, such as the Microsoft Office cache exclusions, are now applied in full.
- Setup now shows a clear message when the .NET 8.0 Runtime is missing.
Improvements NovaBACKUP Client
- A backup that is canceled or reaches its maximum run time is now kept as a restorable backup, and the next run continues from it.
- When Volume Shadow Copy cannot be used and a backup reads the live volume, the job report now says so.
- Windows Search index files are excluded from backups by default.
- Retention runs faster on large backup sets.
